AFRICAN HISTORY : THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

Image
AFRICAN HISTORY : THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE After the discovery of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, some people, especially Europeans, expressed the eargerness to settle in the area. They later established plantations there, as well as in the Caribbean, but their need for cheap labour for their plantations pushed them to Africa. They came to Africa to get people who could work for them for little or no pay. This operation gave rise to Slave Trade. Slave trade was the capturing, transportation and the buying and selling of human beings. It was locally practised in Africa before the arrival of Europeans. With the arrival of the Europeans on the coast of West Africa, the trade was transformed into an intercontinental transaction. This became known as the Transatlantic or Triangular Slave Trade. Several factors accounted for this trade, and it left long-lasting impacts on the African continent. In the 19th century, perhaps because of the horrors of the trade, Great Britai...

ADVICE TO ALL GCE CANDIDATES

Image
The written session of the GCE examination kicks off in a few hours.  BEWARE OF * Prophets who lay hands on you (don't let anyone you don't know lay hands on you, they may be taking away your success) * Success pens and holy water: your success doesn't depend on an object (idol) * Giving offerings during a crusade (you may be sacrificing on the altar of an unknown god). Don't give any offerings where you don't know the crusader. TIPS • During your studies, always PRAY!  • Before you leave the house to get to the exam centre, PRAY! • Before you start answering questions in the exam hall, PRAY! • After taking a paper (after treating a subject), PRAY! • Before you leave the exam centre to go home, PRAY! Let PRAYER be your watchword! Do not rely on your knowledge (Proverbs 3:5). AT THE EXAM CENTRE * Greet your invigilator and smile with him/her * Be relaxed * Feel free to call the attention of the invigilator if need be * Do not take any pre-prepared material ("car...

MONOLOGUE / SOLILOQUY / STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS /ASIDE explained

MONOLOGUE / SOLILOQUY / STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS /ASIDE Both monologue and soliloquy translate the speaker's thoughts to either him/herself or to the audience/other characters. However, if we take the case of someone who's delivering a speech to an audience without any interaction, it's a monologue ("mono" = one, "logue" = speech). This simply implies that a monologue  is directed to an audience who are not allowed to respond (the character reveals his/her thoughts to them). Soliloquy ("soli" = self, "loquy" = speech), on its part, refers to a speech made by a character to him/herself, without an intention to be heard by his/her co-actors, in which s/he expresses his/her thoughts (to the viewers/readers).  Stream of consciousness is a speech (flow of thoughts / ideas) within the character's mind only. For the sake of production (film) or writing (book), the producer/writer just makes us know what's going on within the character...

SOME HIGHLIGHTS IN ACROSS THE MONGOLO BY JOHN NKEMNGONG NKENGASONG

1. IRONY IN ACROSS THE MONGOLO It is ironical that Ngwe, despite his intelligence, is unable to succeed at University. This highlights the marginalization that prevails in the institution. Also, it is ironical that Minister Wankili, who was bred in the Anglophone culture, gives a deaf ear to the Anglophone problem. He says that his office is not a place where people will come and discuss the Anglophone problem. This highlights man's inhumanity to man. Moreover, it is ironical that Teacher Marewe promises to take care of Ngwe and see him through his studies at University but dies without achieving this. This creates pathos as Ngwe is seen abandoned to himselfand struggling all alone to go through University. This tells us that the future is always unpredictable and no one has control over it. It is also ironical that the university of Besaadi is created for the federal republic of Kamangola, but lectures are given in French, and all the authorities are either French-speak...

ESSAY TOPIC: SHOULD ABORTION BE LEGALISED IN OUR COUNTRY?

Image
Essay Topic: Should abortion be legalised in our country? Sample introduction Abortion has become the order of the day in our society nowadays for a handful of reasons. Many do practise it intentionally while it occurs in others unexpectedly. Abortion can be defined as the act of expelling the foetus from the mother's womb while it is yet to mature. However, this could be voluntary or involuntary, the latter case usually being referred to as "miscarriage". This practice has raised controversies as per whether it should be legalised in our country. Supporters of this thesis have advanced strong reasons for it while, on the other hand, their opponents have equally advanced strong arguments against it. Whether abortion should be legalised in our country or not hinges on the reasons that we are going to explicate in the task that lies ahead. Body Plan 1. Abortion should be legalised for the following reasons: * Case of rape * Lack of means to take car...

A-LEVEL GEOGRAPHY PAPER 2, 2019

Image
SECTION B - HUMAN GEOGRAPHY Question 6 (a) Using three criteria, distinguish between rural and urban settlement (8 marks) An urban settlement is an area with a high population density and large size, where the people are occupied in non-agricultural industries. On the other hand, a rural settlement is an area with a lower population density and size, and the inhabitants are occupied with agricultural activities. Based on these definitions, the distinction or differences between urban settlements and rural settlements can be seen at the level of * Population density : the population in urban areas is denser than it is in rural areas; * Size of areas: urban areas are larger than rural areas; * Activities : people in urban areas are occupied with secondary and tertiary activities, whereas in rural areas people are occupied with primary activities such as agriculture. (b) Explain three factors often considered when choosing the location of a rural settlement (8 marks) Th...
